WHAT IS LUPUS
Lupus is
a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body including skin, joints and organs inside the body. In simple
terms, lupus is when something goes wrong with the immune system and the body creates too many antibodies called autoantibodies.
These autoantibodies go into overdrive causing inflammation, pain and destroys healthy tissue and organs. Lupus can range
from mild to life threatening and can affect anyone but mostly affects women of child bearing age. Women of color are 2-3
times more likely to develop lupus. It is unknown how someone gets lupus and currently there is no known cure for lupus. There
have been no new drugs developed to treat lupus in 50 years.
Lupus is represented by the
color purple, a butterfly or a loop.
